At 38k you can easily be finished the campaign and never unlock it, even getting all the recon photos you can along the way. I also think the last flak vest upgrade may be set to unlock at the wrong time. Is this intended? It seems like if you got money for them it would help you keep up with the difficulty spike. I wonder if there isn't an issue with naval recon photos not awarding any money. You have the kill the enemy as fast as possible so they shoot you less and that all comes down to gun dps. I put nothing into crew gear but basic leather gloves and boots, upgraded to armored fuselage 1, radar 2, extinguishers 2 and gear rack 2 in all four positions. You can't try to make your plane a good all rounder in terms of your upgrades, you gotta go for guns, guns, guns. What I've come to realize, and maybe some of the people who found the DLC easy knew this, is that its all about the guns. I got whacked on my first four or five attempts (I would restart if I lost a bomber). I agree the difficulty ramps up very sharply after the first critical mission.
